Search Engine Optimization

SEO for Small Software Companies
Most small software companies are ineffective at search engine optimization (SEO), despite organic search being a core sales driver for their businesses. I will present several techniques which play to our strengths and are generalizable for most niches and budgets. There will be a focus on scalable content generation, using analytics data as an SEO tool, leveraging other business assets to improve SEO, creating linkbait appropriate to one's niche, and similar techniques. I plan on presenting techniques which are ethical, improve the user experience, and actually work. Why you should pick this paper instead of other ones in the field: 1) I promise the presentation will be entertaining, and attendees may even learn something. 2) I blog at http://www.kalzumeus.com and you can see that I know what I'm talking about prior to making a decision to invite me. Of my recent work, http://www.kalzumeus.com/2010/01/24/startup-seo/ is most similar to the general thrust of the presentation I plan on giving. 3) I have absolutely nothing to sell to the attendees and only want to share what I know to eliminate some misconceptions in our industry. 4) Speaking of misconceptions: The four proposed areas for SEO-focused papers in the call for abstracts are Submissions, Doorway pages, Optimization techniques, Link Sponsoring. Doorway pages and poorly implemented link sponsoring will make Google bounce you from the index. Submissions are absolutely worthless. I don't want your attendees being taken advantage of hucksters selling things years out of date.
