Software Upgrades

Software Update Strategies
The presentation covers different update mechanisms for Windows applications, comparing possible merits and risks. In 2010 the questions is not whether applications should have a check for updates mechanism, but how this should be implemented. Spam, privacy restrictions (e.g. "double opt-in") and new social channels (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) pose an increasing challenge to the effectiveness of email communications. A well-implemented update mechanism provides a direct, trusted and appreciated way to stay in touch with the customer, increasing confidence and sales. Conversely, a poor implementation may become a maintenance nightmare for the developer, and further expose usability, privacy and security issues. Considerations: do it yourself vs. third-party solutions, single-application update checks, vs. multi-application approach. Comparison of third-party approaches: .NET Click Once, Google Omaha, FlexNet Connect, Software Director, etc. Future scenarios: updating your own applications via Windows Update.
